The charming town of Aubel nestles at the heart of the verdant Herve Plateau.
Aubel… The name is music to one’s ears and evokes a wide variety of impressions: fine gastronomy, local produce, the Cistercian Abbey of Val-Dieu, the American cemetery, not forgetting the green tracks along the former “Line 38” railway line.
This line, which crosses the Plateau, was built in 1870 to connect Plombières and Chênée, a distance of around 40 km. It was built to improve mining and farming operations and other factories. Freight transport was abandoned in 1986 and the line was dismantled. Nowadays, the former railway line is the preserve of walkers, cyclists and riders. They can walk, cycle and ride in total safety, far away from noise and traffic, in the perfect place to discover the Aubel region.
A free brochure, “En route to Line 38”, has been produced by the Pays de Herve Tourist Information Service. It contains a map of the line as well as all the services available nearby. There are a number of other publications relating to this former railway line: “Beyond Line 38” contains 5 walks around Line 38 available from the Pays d’Aubel Tourist Office, price € 2.50 “The Transhervienne” contains 6 walks around Line 38 available from the Pays de Herve Tourist Information Service, price € 6.50 “Across the Herve Plateaux by train”, history and old photos of Line 38, available from the Pays d’Aubel Tourist Office, price € 30
